ALEXANDRIA, VA – Volunteers of America President and CEO Charles W. Gould has been named by NonProfit Times to its 2009 “Power & Influence Top 50” – a respected and coveted listing of the most influential leaders at work in American philanthropy. This is the fifth consecutive year Gould has been included on the annual list.

In naming him to the list, NonProfit Times stated, “Gould is a partner that other nonprofit CEOs trust. It’s a prime reason affordable housing is getting built in the Gulf region. VoA’s ‘Coming Back Home’ is creating more than 1,000 units of affordable rental housing and has partnered with other nonprofits through Katrina Aid Today to touch the lives of nearly 200,000 people.”

On Sept. 17, Gould will be honored alongside other top nonprofit leaders at a gala hosted by NonProfit Times at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Gould was named national president and CEO of Volunteers of America in 1995. He oversees all operations of the organization, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., and its more than 16,000 employees and 75,000 volunteers. Before his selection as national president, Gould was president of Volunteers of America Health Services. Previously he was an attorney practicing in the Washington, D.C. offices of the venerable law firms of Arnold & Porter and Hogan & Hartson.

One of the oldest and most comprehensive human services providers in the United States, Volunteers of America helps more than 2 million people in approximately 400 communities nationwide. The organization – which is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of affordable housing – is working to build new homes in New Orleans and the Gulf region that will allow displaced residents to rebuild their lives. The largest of these projects, a 200-unit residence for seniors called Terraces on Tulane, is scheduled to open in New Orleans later this year.

In June, Volunteers of America launched its new Aging with OptionsTM initiative, aimed at transforming the current senior care system by providing people with guidance and control over their care, and by allowing older Americans the freedom to receive care while living longer in their own homes. Volunteers of America is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable senior housing, the fourth-largest nonprofit provider of skilled nursing care and the sixth-largest nonprofit provider of assisted living for seniors in the United States.
