Literacy

Children reading a Clifford book
The Scholastic Book Grants Program is a corporate in-kind giving program that provides high-quality reading materials to the nation's neediest young people. Scholastic’s goal is to ensure that each of its book donations has a significant impact on fostering literacy. Volunteers of America is one of several key national nonprofit organizations that are well suited to reach the nation's at-risk children and has participated in the program since 1999.  Since that time, Scholastic has provided Volunteers of America with over one million books which the organization has provided to children in our programs and communities in 30 states.

Featured Program: Words Travel

Words Travel is a national literacy and family strengthening program that strengthens the bonds between incarcerated parents and their children through reading. Words Travel is a partnership of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company; Volunteers of America and correctional facilities around the country.

Hope is an Open Heart

Volunteers of America has worked with Scholastic to create “Hope is an Open Heart,” an uplifting new book that teaches children hope can be found in some of the most unexpected places. Scholastic Inc. will donate one dollar from the sale of each hardcover edition of “Hope is an Open Heart” to Volunteers of America, which provides services to children in need in communities nationwide.
